Carl E. (Dick) Hettlinger, 90, formerly of Cheshire and Southington, died suddenly in his New Milford, CT home on Sunday, October 25, 2009. He was the beloved husband of Eleanor (Bonkosky) Hettlinger for 64 years.

He was born on February 1, 1919 to the late Otto and Eva (nee Weiss) Hettlinger in Waterbury, CT. After attending Waterbury schools Carl was employed by Scoville in Waterbury, CT as a tool grinder. Carl entered the U.S. Navy and served during WWII in the Pacific from 1944 ' 1946.

After the war he rejoined Scoville and later worked for Century Brass from which he retired in 1980. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southington, CT, as well as a long time member of Herman Sons.

He will be remembered for his love of gardening and how he so thoroughly enjoyed the game of Pinochle.

In addition to his wife Eleanor he is survived by his three children: Robert Hettlinger and his wife, Phyllis, of Bloomington, MN., Richard Hettlinger and his wife, Barbara, of East Longmeadow, MA., and Jane Sanger and her husband Robert of New Milford, CT. ; six grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

He was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Alex and Harold Hettlinger, and two sisters, Ella Gohs and Edith Ulrich.

There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 232 Bristol St., Southington, CT. on Wednesday October 28, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in South End Cemetery, Southington
