Listen to Obituary

E. Stephen Leggett, 77, of Southington, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Friday, January 2, 2026. He was the loving husband of Deborah J. Moores Leggett for 38 years.

Steve was born on September 11, 1948 in Waterbury, CT to the late Rita Irene (Bohan) Leggett and Edwin Shafter Leggett.

Steve worked as a corporate executive until September 10, 2001. On that day, he came home in the evening from NYC, planning to work from home the next day, which happened to be his birthday. This decision changed the trajectory of his entire life. Steve embarked on a new career as a certified teacher and worked at Southington High School for nearly 10 years, retiring in 2014, and continuing to tutor. Steve was very active in Southington boys basketball programs, both town and high school and coached town league girls softball. He was a devout Catholic and served as a Eucharistic minister at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury and in Stephen Ministry. Steve volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury Soup Kitchen and made deliveries for Bread for Life in Southington. He was a proud grandfather and loved watching his grandkids sporting events. He was also a lifetime member of the Southington YMCA where he enjoyed being part of the supportive community and made many loving  friendships over the years.

In addition to his wife Debbie, he is survived by two children; son, Jamie Edwin Leggett and his wife Meghan McNicholas Leggett and daughter, Erin Rose Leggett Gardner and her husband Roy Gardner, stepchildren; Jonathan Vath and Chief Senior Sonar Technician C. Kevin Maher and his wife Amanda Jacobsen Maher, 10 grandchildren; Jamie Jr., Isabella, Nicholas and Sophia Leggett, Nellie and Maebel Gardner, Jared, Maia and Charlie Vath and Liam Maher and two great-grandchildren, Stella and Khoen Vath. He is also survived by three sisters, Susan Rinaldi (Domenic), Nancy Terenzi (Ulysses Dean) and Cathy Scanlon (Steve), one niece and several nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve’s memory may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, Inc. (https://www.svdpmission.org/soup-kitchen).
