Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Wernicki, of Southington, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026 at the Southington Care Center, surrounded by her family and wonderful staff.
She is survived by her four children, Jerry Wernicki and his companion Paula Fontana, Denise Witkoski and her late husband Robert, Christine Dammling and her husband Bill and James Wernicki and his wife Amy, eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Chester, three sisters, Marion, Delores and Jeanette, her sister-in-law, Keith Wernicki, and son-in-law, Bob Witkoski.
Betty was born in Meriden, CT and baptized at St Rose Lima Church. She attended Meriden High School where she was a member of the Falcon Fife & Drum Corp and met her husband Chet who attended Wilcox Technical School nearby. She married Chet at St. Rose Church in Meriden in 1958 and then moved to Heinsville, GA after Chet was drafted into the US Army. She worked several office jobs including, Cunos Engineering in Meriden, Nickson Industries in Southington and 17 years at Waco Scaffolding in Cheshire.
Betty was an avid church member at Mary Our Queen Church in Plantsville where she often attended daily mass. She also attended the Eucharistic Adoration at St Thomas Church in Southington. In 1997, she and her sister Delores took a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia to visit the site of the Virgin Mary apparitions.
Betty had several hobbies over her lifetime. She loved to dance the Polka with her husband Chet. One of their proud dancing moments was winning the King and Queen dancing award at St. Rose Church. She often joined Chet for a round of golf at Timberlin Golf Course where she would caddy for him. She also loved to do ceramics and drive for Fish for those who required transportation services. Betty loved to cook and host family get-togethers, especially for the holidays. One of her favorite vacation spots was Sturbridge, Massachusetts. She also loved to take her family to visit her sister Delores in Florida, and take summer vacations with her family at Hawks Nest Beach in Old Lyme, CT. Most of all, her family was her heart, her purpose and her greatest blessing.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at St. Dominic’s Church, 1050 Flanders Rd., Southington. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at church. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Southington. Calling hours will be from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026 at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville.
