George A. Schmidt Sr., 85, of Southington, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2025 at the HOCC at New Britain.
He was born on October 11, 1939 in New Haven to the late John and Helen (Smith) Schmidt. He graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Class of 1958, and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy, being honorably discharged in 1962.
George worked as a motorcycle patrol officer in the City of New Haven and he was also part of the dive team. After his retirement from the police force, he worked as a security officer at the Yale Library for 15 years.
George loved trips to his lake house in Maine and enjoyed being on the water, especially boating and sailing. He was a member of the Westbrook Elks Club and the Shoreline Sailing Club.
George is survived by his son, George A. Schmidt Jr. and Lisa Feola; daughter, Carleen Rubin and husband Larry; one grandson, Ryan Horner, all of Southington, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Marion Chambers and her husband Norman and his brother, John “Jack” Schmidt.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Burial with military honors will follow in the State Veteran’s Cemetery, Middletown. Calling hours will be held prior to the funeral from 10:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
