Joan W. Ackerman

Listen to Obituary

Joan (Whidtfeldt) Ackerman, beloved wife, aunt, cousin and friend, passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family on January 30th, 2026.

Joan was born in Hartford on October 10,1937, daughter of the late George Sr. and AnnaMay (Bedford) Whidtfeldt. She was raised in Hartford and graduated from Weaver High School. Joan shared an extraordinary love story of over 70 years with her husband, Kenneth Ackerman. They were high-school sweethearts, and their love story and subsequent marriage was a lifelong example of devotion, partnership and deep friendship.

Joan carried with her a warmth, quiet strength, and a caring nature throughout her life. Joan never missed a family event or special occasion and was always there to celebrate milestones, small or large. She was always there to provide a loving hug and soothing words during sorrowful times. A devoted Catholic, until unable to do so, she attended daily mass. Her family often referred to her as “Saint Joan.” Joan had a special affinity for sun, boating and the beach and she was incredibly proud of her Irish heritage. She enjoyed card games, crocheting, needle point and her beloved New England Patriots. She was also a voracious reader and was deeply passionate about keeping up with current events.

Joan leaves behind to mourn her passing, her devoted husband, Kenneth Ackerman; her nephew, Troy Whidtfeldt; her dear cousin and devoted advocate and champion, Mary Marcial and her husband Dave, and many extended family members, all of whom lovingly knew her as “Aunt Joan.” In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, George Whidtfeldt Jr. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, gentle spirit, and the steady love she gave so freely to her family. Her presence was a gift, and she will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Southington Community Services, 91 Norton St., Plantsville, CT 06479.
