Josephine A. Varjas

Josephine A. (Michonski) Varjas, 97, of Southington, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Southington Care Center. She was the wife of the late Geza "Gil" Varjas.
Born in Wallingford on March 7, 1920, she was the last surviving of five children to the late Francis and Agnes Michonski.  Josephine worked for many years in area factories, and retired from Allied Controls.  She remained active well into her 90’s, participating in senior programs at the YMCA, was a member of the Calendar House,  was a talented knitter, and more recently, enjoyed all of the activities that Southington Care Center offered.  She was a proud Red Sox fan, enjoyed trips to the casino, and frequented her grandson’s bar, The Hydeaway Café, where she affectionately gave everyone her famous right hand punch in the arm.  Above all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother who took great pride in and supported all of her family’s activities and endeavors.  The matriarch of her family, she will be greatly missed, leaving them with many cherished memories.
She leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and George Hyde, with whom she made her home until three years ago; her son, Gilbert Varjas; her grandchildren, Kevin Hyde and Fran Pagano, Jeffrey and Linda Hyde, Kelley and Joe Deriu, Kristen Varjas, and Grant Varjas; 6 great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Helen Albrecht, Adeline Savago, and Irene Moore, and her brother, Ted Michonski.
Her family extends their appreciation to the entire staff at Southington Care Center, who were Josephine’s second family for the past three years.

In lieu of flower, contributions may be made to the Southington Care Center, 45 Meriden Ave, Southington, CT 06489.
