Dr. Laura Rosanne Triano of the Milldale section of Southington passed away following a brief illness. The eldest daughter of Nancy R. and the late Francis M. Triano, Laura’s mother often recounted how she was born during a blizzard that would shut down the State of Connecticut. In an effort to be efficient, the obstetrician filled out her birth certificate ahead of time, anticipating that she would be born on January 20th. Laura entered the world at 12:32 AM on January 21st, demonstrating that since day one, and throughout her life, she would do things on her own terms.
Raised in Southington, Laura was Salutatorian of her graduating class at Southington High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Neuroscience from Trinity College as well as a Master of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature for which she completed all coursework at the University of Córdoba in Spain, reflecting her lifelong interest in the arts and sciences. Laura earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Connecticut and completed Internal Medicine residency, as well as fellowship training in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Yale University. She was a national recipient of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Conquer Cancer Foundation award supporting physicians committed to caring for patients in underserved communities.
A staunch advocate for preserving the humanity and dignity of those often unable to advocate for themselves, Laura prioritized patients over profit and understood fully that illness is one of life’s great equalizers—and the most humbling reminder to physicians of the far-reaching implications of their oath and duty to serve others. Known for her sharp wit and unapologetic candor, she valued integrity and authenticity in others and held no favor for “performative politics.” Laura considered her greatest accomplishment the privilege and gift of caring for her father while he was dying, an experience that impacted her profoundly and far eclipsed any of the academic accolades or professional degrees she earned throughout her lifetime.
Laura enjoyed gardening and took great solace in capturing the beauty of nature through photography, painting, and flower arranging. Family, friends, and neighbors were often treated to cheerful bouquets of her treasured dahlias “just because,” with nothing ever expected in return. Laura also enjoyed reading about interior design and historic restorations as well as collecting antiques, more interested in the unique story of a piece than its monetary value. She was so blessed to have been raised in a family that loved unconditionally and was fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel and live throughout the world, experiences that underscored the countless privileges afforded by our beloved yet imperfect nation that far too many take for granted. Laura enjoyed Spanish literature and music as well as cooking and baking, including preserving many of the recipes central to her family’s Italian-American heritage.
Laura was predeceased by her father, Francis, as well as her paternal grandparents, Louis and Rose (Santoro) Triano of Waterbury. In addition to her mother, Nancy, she is survived by her sister, Lisa C. Triano, of Southington, her aunt and uncle, Joanne (Triano) and David Tellerico of Cheshire, and many cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Laura’s memory to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (https://give.doctorswithoutborders.org), World Central Kitchen (https://www.wck.org), or to a charity of one’s choice.
At Laura’s request, services are private and at the convenience of her family. Plantsville Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements.
