Mary “May” (Cunningham) Maxwell, 80, of Southington, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, October 13, 2025 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She had been the loving wife of Walter “Scotty” Maxwell for 57 years.
May was born in Glasgow, Scotland on May 2, 1945 to the late George and Elizabeth (McBlain) Cunningham.
In 1967, May and Walter came to the United States seeking opportunities for their young family, eventually becoming US Citizens in 1983. May had a long career in the banking industry. She was a member of the British Overseas American Club (BOAC), where she and Walter enjoyed many dances and family events. They met many of their lifelong friends at the BOAC. She enjoyed traveling, trips to the casino and playing cards and darts. She also liked crafting, ceramics, knitting and crocheting. May was a loving wife, proud mother and grandmother and was happiest when she was surrounded by her family.
May is survived by 3 daughters, Shirley Stearns and her husband Wayne, Christine Maxwell and her husband Al Gorobzov and Linda Maxwell and her husband Jim Earl, all of Southington; 9 grandchildren: Andrew, Elizabeth, MacKenzie, Melanie, Jake, Katrina, Jessica, Laura and Micala and 2 great-grandchildren, Railynn and Caleb. She is also survived by five siblings, David Cunningham and wife June, James Cunningham and his partner Debbie, George Cunningham and wife Shirley, Jean Cunningham and her partner Bruce and Jo-Anne Schiebel and her partner Gerry, all of Canada, and many nieces and nephews.
May’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Farmington Station and Brighton Hospice for their care and compassion.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025 at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Calling hours will be held before the service from 5 – 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
