Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Robert “Bob” W. Hammersley, 59, of Southington, CT passed away following a courageous and inspiring fight against cancer. He was born in Wallingford, CT on July 27, 1966, to the late William and Audrey (Harrison) Hammersley.

Bob leaves behind his girlfriend, best friend and wife, Lisa (DuBois) Hammersley, as well as four children, Allison, John “Jack,” Ian and William.

Bob, above all else, was committed to his love for his family and friends. He valued time spent with them, making memories that will live on in the hearts of all those he came into contact with.

Devoted to public service, he spent much of his life contributing to the betterment of his community. For several decades, he was employed in Federal and State government, working in both legislative and executive branches of Connecticut state government. In these roles, he worked with Governors, legislators and business leaders to develop and implement a statewide transportation strategy. Here he also made several lifelong friends and was proud to have an opportunity to contribute to his state’s vitality.

Following his employment in the public sector, Bob joined Diversified Technology Consultants, managing their government relations operations. His success in that role led him to be appointed as DTC’s Vice-President and Chief Administrative Officer. In this role, he worked with numerous state, county and local leaders to advance public projects which enhanced communities throughout Connecticut and Florida.

In 2015, Bob was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Southington Planning & Zoning Commission; a position that he was successfully elected to in 2017 and 2021. In 2019, he was unanimously elected as the commission’s chairman. In this role, Bob worked collaboratively with other town elected officials and staff tirelessly to enhance Southington’s economic development. He was most proud of his commitment to instilling ethical, transparent and inclusive government. His dedication and service resulted in an environment that enhanced the betterment for all of Southington’s residents for decades to come.

To devote his time to his health, Bob “retired” from professional life upon being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in March 2023. His treatments included a variety of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy with limited successes over the past three years. Ultimately, he was directed to phase 1 clinical trial. This gave him, as he would say, “A final opportunity to give something back to the community with information that may someday save a life or lead to a cure of the cancer nightmare.” Throughout his battle, Bob remained positive and upbeat about his condition and life, focusing on celebrating the joy and happiness of each other’s company.

With his enthusiastic interest in history, Bob enjoyed taking trips to historical sites throughout the United States and Canada; many times with his family in tow. Each time using these trips as an opportunity to teach them about the role (most times) these obscure sites play in our history. He was a lifelong fan of the 27x World Champion New York Yankees, the NY Giants, Knicks and the Rangers.

Bob found infinite happiness with his wife of 16 years. His dedication to her happiness and comfort was obvious to all those around them. From the moment he met Lisa, he knew that while he “Can’t do everything, he would do anything for her.” Her support throughout his battle provided him with the strength, determination and courage to fight and ultimately with the comfort to pass in peace. Their love was deep-the type of love that will live on eternally.

To his children, he reminds them that he lives on in their hearts and souls. There is no love like the love between a father and his children. One of his final wishes was that he would be the inspiration they admire.

In addition, Bob is survived by his sisters, Lisa DeMartino, Laura Sorber, Linda Aparo and Liana Forrette. Bob was also supported by countless friends. Their unwavering love and support provided him comfort as he fought the disease that afflicts too many. He was grateful to them all.

Finally, the family wishes to express gratitude to the medical professionals that treated him over the past three years. Particularly, Dr. Hosmer and Dr. Patel, as well as the staff at Hartford Healthcare.

To all those that made Bob's acquaintance, he asks that they remember it is always darkest before the dawn. No matter how hard it may seem the sun will rise on a new day and bring with it healing.

Life should be fragrant; dream out loud.
