Robert “Sam” Carrubba, 88, of Southington, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025 at Autumn Lake in New Britain. He was the loving husband of Beatrice (Bak) Carrubba for 62 years.
Sam was born in New Britain, CT on October 16, 1936 to the late Sebastian and Agnes (Danko) Carrubba. He served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer.
In addition to his parents, Sam was predeceased by two brothers, John Carrubba (Marie) and Ronald Carrubba, one sister, Rosalie Menard (Delphis) and sister-in-law, Gertrude Carrubba.
He worked at Tuttle & Bailey and Skinner Valve both in New Britain. After retiring, he was a starter at Hawk’s Landing Country Club for many years. He was a longtime parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion, and the Good Old Boys/Lords Club of New Britain.
Sam enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing setback at the Berlin and Southington Senior Centers. A devoted Yankee and UConn fan, his love for sports extended into coaching and managing his three sons and later attending and cheering on all of his grandchildren at their games. He even became known as the “50/50 lucky raffle winner.”
He loved vacationing in Florida with his family and spending time with his adorable and beloved great-grandchildren, who fondly called him “Sampa.” Another favorite getaway was Old Saybrook, where he cherished making memories with his “Boys” and special friends. Sam looked forward to lots of laughter and good times playing Uno and gathering at annual Labor Day picnics with all who loved him. He was also an excellent cook, known for his “more salt the better” salads and delicious pizzas—a tradition now carried on by his son. In quieter moments, he could often be found working on puzzles and sudoku or relaxing while watching Westerns and cowboy movies.
In addition to his wife Beatrice, Sam is survived by his brother, Salvatore Carrubba of Kensington. He is also survived by his three sons; Robert Carrubba Jr. and his wife Susan of FL, Richard Carrubba and his wife Lisa of Southington and Ryan Carrubba and his wife Erin of Kensington, six grandchildren; Brittany, Breanna, Skylar, Ryder, Gavin and Logan and great-grandchildren; Brighton and Brody and many special nieces and nephews, as well as extended family.
Sam will be remembered as a hardworking, quiet, kind, and caring man with a very thick head of “never-graying” hair. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A funeral service will be celebrated at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 4 – 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held privately.
