William “Bill” McNerney, 83, of Newington, formerly of Plantsville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at The Summit at Plantsville.
He was born in Waterbury on April 13, 1943 to the late William and Betty (Bowes) McNerney.
Bill graduated from St. Anthony High School in Bristol and went on to The University of Hartford Art School where he earned his associates degree in Sculpture.
He worked at the Hartford Courant and Lux Bond & Green in West Hartford, retiring after 23 years of service. Bill was an avid reader and a detailed gardener and decorator. He loved playing the lottery and visiting museums and art shows. He also enjoyed trips to Italy and Acapulco. Bill was an exceptional son, brother, uncle, and friend with a great sense of humor. He was devoted to his many cats over the years and cherished his friend’s Lhasa Apso, Jake.
Bill is survived by two sisters, Cornelia (McNerney) Hanson and Elizabeth “Betsy” McNerney and three nephews, Renny Hanson (Brenda), Bill Hanson (Debbie) and their children, Nicole and Emily, Tim Hanson (Margie) and their children, James and Molly.
In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother-in-law Rennold Hanson II, aunts in Waterbury and very dear friends, Kay and Richard.
Bill’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at the Summit at Plantsville, especially to Barbara, Todd, GG, Sam and Izmire, for their compassion and excellent care they provided.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington.
