Arthur H. Anderson, Jr. (91) of Southington, CT passed away peacefully on July 18, 2020. Born on June 15, 1929 to the late Arthur and Margaret (Hogan) Anderson Sr., Art graduated from New Britain High School and Connecticut Teachers College (now CCSU) earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts. Thereafter, Art obtained a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Hartford. He worked in the New Britain school system as an industrial arts teacher for 16 years (Central Jr. High and Slade Jr. High). In 1968, Art joined Central Connecticut State College and worked as a dean in the Continuing Education Division until he retired in 1992.
Art met the love of his life, Martha Hall, on a beach in Old Saybrook. Despite Martha playfully capsizing the row boat on their first date (while Art wore brand new shoes), they fell in love and later married in June 1955. Art enjoyed reading, wood working, mechanical projects, refinishing furniture, and boating. Art and Mart loved the beach and the many years they spent in West Dennis, MA. They were fortunate to enjoy a long retirement with their children and six grandchildren, and they loved every minute of it. Well, almost every minute, maybe not the annual Cape Cod water balloon toss so much.
Art was a kind, caring gentleman who loved meeting new people. Though soft spoken and humble, he always enjoyed an engaging conversation with family, friends and new acquaintances. Art was involved in numerous volunteer activities. For many years, he spent Saturdays at the Klingberg Children’s Home working with young boys, teaching them woodworking skills. Art was also a member of the team that founded The Constructive Workshop in New Britain (now CW Resources), an organization focused on providing vocational work for those with disabilities. Throughout his time with this organization, Art played numerous roles, eventually serving as president and board chair.
Art was predeceased by Martha, his loving wife of 60 years. He leaves his son, Arthur and wife Suzanne, of Ridgefield, CT, daughter, Brenda and husband Mario, of MA, and daughter, Heidi of MA. His grandchildren, Becky, Carly, Nick, Ben, Skyler, and Dakota will miss their Poppy. Art also leaves his sister in law, Helen Anderson, and several nieces. Art was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Anderson.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the assisted living staff and others at LiveWell. They sincerely appreciate the sacrifices and devotion of these healthcare heroes. Donations in Art’s memory may be made to the Klingberg Family Centers or the LiveWell Employee Fund. Due to covid, burial will be private.
